Margarette Hanes Old (1885-1963)

Margarette Hanes Old was born in 1885 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and graduated from Salem Academy. In 1901, Mrs. Old’s father and uncle founded the manufacturing companies that would become Hanes. She was married William Thomas Old, former president of Seaboard Citizens National Bank, and moved to Norfolk in 1912, where she became active in several civic organizations. In 1960 Mrs. Old donated stock to create the Margarette Hanes Old Student and Nurse Educational Fund at the community foundation to provide scholarships for students from Hampton Roads to attend Salem College in North Carolina or study nursing at Norfolk General Hospital.


Since 1961 more than 310 students have received almost $375,000 is scholarships to attend Salem College and the nursing program at Sentara College of Health Sciences (formerly Norfolk General Hospital).
