Lt. Col. Joseph Addison Hagan
Lt. Col. J. Addison Hagan graduated from college in 1916 and served in the Marine Corps in World War I where he earned the distinguished service cross. Despite being wounded and discharged during the war, he served his country again in amphibious operations in World War II. Hagan also founded a building materials business in Norfolk and served in the Virginia General Assembly from 1948 to 1950. After Hagan died in 1978 his friends Gov. Colgate and Constance Darden created a scholarship fund in his memory. The scholarship is for Hampton Roads students attending Virginia Military Institute, Hagan’s alma mater.
