Julia Atwater Bristow
Julia Bristow was a Norfolk native who worked for 30 years as a civilian writer at the Naval Safety Center editing the Lifeline magazine. Her father was principal of Maury High School; her mother was a former teacher. Julia graduated from Maury High, attended Sweet Briar College and graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the College of William and Mary. In her free time she created award-winning watercolor paintings and relaxed at the cottage in Quinby on the Eastern Shore. She loved to read, travel and cultivate flowers to attract butterflies. Through a bequest in her will Bristow, who died in 2012 at age 85, left more than $1 million to create a scholarship at the Hampton Roads Community Foundation. The Julia Atwater Bristow Fund will forever help students from Norfolk and the Eastern Shore of Virginia attend college.
