Dr. Alfred L. "Buzzy" Schulwolf

Alfred L. “Buzzy” Schulwolf graduated from the University of Virginia Medical School debt free in 1958 thanks in large part to the four-year scholarship he received from the Florence L. Smith Fund. Although the dollar amount sounds small today, the $3,000 annual scholarship paid for most the Schulwolf’s medical education. The Norfolk native returned home to build a pediatric practice that grew into Tidewater Children’s Associates Ltd., one of Hampton Roads’ largest pediatric groups. In 2003 he began making annual donations to the Florence L. Smith Fund to repay the gift Florence Smith had given him, and in 2012 he donated funds from his Individual Retirement Account to create his own permanent legacy named for him and his late wife. The Buzzy and Helen Schulwolf Fund for Smith Scholars provides supplemental aid to a Florence L. Smith scholarship recipient.

Impact

“The foundation’s scholarships mean so much. I am grateful that someone recognized what I’ve done and wants to help me.”
